Caitlin looked around the room. Except it wasn’t a room; it was a suite. And she had no wish or desire to know what this kind of suite cost on a daily basis. The rooms were beautifully decorated. The bedroom was huge, there was a second bedroom, along with a sitting room, dressing room, a study and two bathrooms.

‘I took the liberty of arranging some things for you—for our date,’ he hastened to add.

‘What do you mean?’

He gestured towards the open door of one of the bedrooms. Caitlin took a few steps inside and stopped. On the bed in front of her was an array of elegant dresses, carefully positioned. There were also open boxes of shoes in a variety of styles. She walked over and touched the first dress. It was red; not a colour that someone would think of for a woman with auburn hair, but Caitlin did wear red when she wanted to. There was another style in black, one in deep purple, another in green and the last in silver.

A smell drifted towards her and she walked over to the bathroom. Inside, there was a bath already prepared, rose petals on the surface, and the light scent of oranges and jasmine. She smiled. It seemed as if Javier had thought of everything. She walked back to the dresses, holding each one up against her and looking at the reflection in the mirror. She wasn’t quite sure which one she wanted to wear, the truth being each one was just as beautiful as the next.

She slipped off her clothes and stepped into the bath. It was warm and soothing. Javier had clearly remembered that the scent of oranges was one of her favourites. She frequently favoured candles, shampoos and oils with the aroma of oranges. He’d joked that one day he’d need to give over some of the vineyard for orange trees just to keep her happy, and a tiny part of her heart had saved those words in a little pocket of her brain as a memory to treasure.

At the time they’d still essentially been sparring partners—and it had been a casual remark, half joking—but for Caitlin it was something to hold onto. When she hadn’t been shown much affection or interest by either of her parents, someone saying something so personal and thoughtful was something she clung onto.

By the time she emerged from the bathroom, her hair wrapped in a towel, she found a tray of appetisers in the room, along with a cold glass of rosé wine—another of her favourites. She nibbled at the appetisers and sipped the wine, thinking of how perfect the day seemed.

She dried and styled her hair, half clipping it up, then applied the little make-up she had in her bag and went to pick a dress. It seemed that Javier had remembered another detail. Underwear was now next to the bed, all in a variety of shades to match each of the dresses.

She picked up one of the bras and looked at the label.
